You could say that seaglass is a man-made jewel.  The rolling of the sea tides and the course sand and rock beds below turn man made waste into sought after jewels.

It forms naturally where there are rocks in the sand or rocky shores just at the edge of the beach.   Not all beaches produce sea glass and some of the most pristine produce no sea glass at all.

Delmarva has some of the finest areas for sea glass hunting with seekers often rating the peninsula among the top destinations for hobbyists.  Popular locations are Indian River Inlet, Old New Castle Beach and Woodland Beach.

How is sea glass formed?  When broken glass reaches the ocean from ship wreaks, beach trash or wastes dumps the ocean takes over.

According to Anne Bailey of USA Today, “When broken glass falls into the oceans the tides cause it to move over the sand and rocks below.  This movement, combined with the abrasive action of millions of sand particles, causes the surface of the glass to be worn down and etched.  Sharp and jagged bits of glass turn into smooth, irregularly shaped pieces with a soft, matte finish.  Read more of Anne’s article here  traveltips.usatoday.com

So, whatever you plan to do with your sea glass haul Delaware beaches are a great place to search and add to your sea glass collection.
