On our way back to reality after several days of beach time, my friend and I decided to go side trippin’.

Unencumbered with kids or dogs, we headed north on Route 213 all the way to Chestertown, Maryland.  Situated on the Chester River, this charming and historic town was a great choice for and afternoon of exploring.  Visit the Town of Chestertown for more exciting info and events.

We visited the many quaint shops and choose the Lemon Leaf Cafe for a delicious lunch.  The cafe was welcoming and the service excellent.  We chose the jumbo lump crab cake and homemade albacore tuna salad.  I was a bit disappointed at first that the sandwiches came with chips, until they arrived.  The chips were homemade and freshly fried with just enough seasoning!

After lunch we bought coconut cupcakes at the bakery next door to take home and enjoy.

A stroll through town down to the river worked off a bit of our lunch and we met this guy!  We call him Chester.

Once we were home I wanted to learn more about Chestertown and so did a bit of research on it’s history and found that it’s a very vibrant city with an active business community.  It’s somewhere I want to visit again so I decided to visit the last weekend in October for Downrigging Weekend.  This is tall ship and wooden boat festival in “Americas best preserved colonial seaport”.  There are rides and tours of 10-12 tall ships right on the Chester River!

Of course, there is music and entertainment, food and the Dock Dogs, ” the world’s premiere canine aquatics competition”.

As JR, the owner of the Lemon Leaf Cafe, says so eloquently – “Life is Short, Break the Rules”
